The authorities of Nepal announced yesterday that the country will increase the fees for permits to ascend Mount Everest by 36%, which makes access to the highest peak in the world more expensive for the first time in nearly 10 years.
Revenue from the collection of permits, as well as other expenses of foreign climbers, are one of the main sources of income and employment in Nepal, which suffers from a lack of cash flow. Among the 14 highest mountains in the world, all are in Nepal, including Mount Everest.
"The fee for a permit to ascend Mount Everest, whose height is 8849 meters, will be 15 thousand dollars, which is 36% higher than the fee that has remained for the last 10 years at the level of 11 thousand dollars," said Narayan Prasad Rajbhandari, the director of the Ministry of Tourism.
